Manchester City’s summer signing Benjamin Mendy landed himself in some hot water on Saturday when he appeared to poke fun at Brighton’s Lewis Dunk. The Frenchman, who joined the North-West outfit from Monaco earlier this summer, played no part in the club’s Premier League opener against Brighton due to lack of fitness.Instead, the left-back watched the game on television, and made his assessment of the contest known on Twitter. It took 70 minutes for Pep Guardiola’s side to break the deadlock as Sergio Aguero opened the scoring at the Amex.City’s lead was later doubled when Dunk accidentally headed the ball into his own net when he tried to clear the danger. After the own goal was scored, Mendy tweeted a message that seemed to make fun of his fellow professional.
After the match, which ended 2-0, BT Sport pundits Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard criticised Mendy’s behaviour, describing his tweet as a “cheap shot”.
After facing criticism for his comment, Mendy went back on the social media website to apologise.
