Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have formed a strong partnership at Tottenham Hotspur over the years, but there is a danger that it could be broken.
The future of Alderweireld remains uncertain as he is yet to sign fresh terms at the North London outfit, despite the majority of his teammates doing so over the past year.
The Belgian has just over one year remaining on his current deal, but if he triggers a one-year extension, there is a period when he will be available at a cost of just £25m.
Rumours have been swirling about what could happen to Alderweireld this summer, and as expected, Tottenham fans have been having their say on Twitter.
Vertonghen, who has played most of the season without his centre-back partner due to the 29-year-old’s injury problems, has now been asked about the situation, and he has gone for the diplomatic response.
While speaking to Sky Sports News, the Belgian said:
“Whenever we play we understand each other. When I left for Tottenham, Toby left for Atletico [Madrid] and Southampton but we found each other quite quick after that, so no stress. We’ve been playing together for a long time and we know how to play together, but I don’t want to speak about this because it might sound disrespectful to whoever is playing next to me or next to Toby in other situations.”
