Rangers are reportedly set to dump Joe Dodoo this summer, but is it a mistake from Steven Gerrard?
What’s the story?
According to Football Insider, Dodoo has no future at Ibrox despite an impressive loan spell this season.
The 23 year-old has been on loan with Blackpool in League One this term, where has mustered ten goal involvements in only 25 appearances.
His contract in Glasgow runs until the summer of 2020, and here are three reasons why he should get the chance to earn a new one…
Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…
Depth
The first issue Gerrard is going to be faced with this summer is a lack of quality depth up front. With Kyle Lafferty basically non-existent and Jermain Defoe ageing fast, the gaffer has very little support for Alfredo Morelos.
And that is assuming Morelos stays at the club; if the Colombian international leaves then that is even more reason to keep Dodoo.
Of course, he is not going to come in and compete with or replace Morelos directly, but the added depth will take some pressure off the feisty talisman.
Versatility
Dodoo can play a variety of positions, which is a huge boost for any manager.
The youngster has played seven times as a centre forward for Blackpool this season, seven times on the left wing and twice on the opposite flank, per Transfermarkt.
He has scored at least one goal from all three of those positions, showing he is more than capable of filling various roles during an injury crisis or meaningless cup game.
Room to improve
Finally, there must surely still be some hope that Dodoo can amount to more than just a versatile depth player.
The youngster does not have a prolific goalscoring record, but with six goals and four assists in 1,292 minutes this season, he is contributing to a goal every game and a half, which is actually very good.
On top of that, if Defoe was willing to take the youngster under his wing, then who better to learn from?
The 23 year-old already has some great physical and technical traits, and perhaps one of the best poachers of all time can teach him a trick or two about being in the right place at the right time.
So, Rangers fans, do you think Dodoo should get another chance? Or is he simply not good enough? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
