Is there a better left-back in the Premier League than Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson?
Probably not.
The Scottish defender has been a revelation since joining the Reds for a reported fee of just £8m (via The Independent) from Hull City after his former side were relegated to the Championship in 2017.
After initially being used on a sporadic basis by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, Robertson forced his way into the starting eleven by delivering an outstanding level of consistency and therefore outshining the somewhat erratic style employed by Alberto Moreno.
By combining his outstanding ability in reading the game with a clear threat going forward, the 25-year-old has established himself as a key component in the Reds’ side and has continued his form throughout the current campaign.
With the Merseyside club currently leading the Premier League by two points and in a great position to progress past the Champions League quarter-finals in April, their hopes may hinge on the availability of Robertson.
Therefore, the possibility of him being absent from the Scotland team due to an emergency dental operation (according to the Liverpool Echo) for their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers with Kazakhstan and San Marino could turn out to be extremely beneficial for the Reds as it would mean that he will be 100% ready for their clash with Tottenham Hotspur on March 31st.
Yet with the defender willing to play through the pain for Alex McLeish’s side, Klopp will undoubtedly be hoping that he doesn’t suffer any further setbacks as it would force him to call upon Moreno, who has failed to impress at all during his five appearances this season. Throwing the Spaniard into a game against a dangerous Spurs side would be extremely risky and given his previous record of costing the Reds in the biggest of moments, it would a risk that his German boss would simply not want to take.
With Liverpool on the verge of winning their first top-flight title in 29 years, keeping their defensive core fit is arguably the most important factor that would help them overcome Guardiola’s City.
